How do you read?

I LOVED this meme that I saw on The Book Club Blog and I have decided to play along!

How do you organise your books?

To be honest, there is no particular order. I keep NF together on one shelf. And I keep series together on another shelf. Everything else I just arrange according to size (believe it or not!)

My DH has his own two shelves and he gives stuff away as soon as he’s done! I really should learn from his example – he only reads NF and I think he organises by subject. Child1 organises by series or by author and Child2 goes by size too!

Do you prefer series books or stand alone books?

I have always been into stand alone books and only recently discovered series books. I would say that I like them both. When I do read a series then I buy them all in one go and then read them – it would KILL me to have to wait a few months for a follow-up book within a series.

Do you have a favorite time of day and/or place to read?

I can read ANYTIME. It used to happen mostly at night but I’m busy changing this part of my routine so I can have more computer time after hours. I have been doing all my reading during my lunch time at work – that’s a full hour of reading done in my car. And then, I may do about 10 minutes or so at night when I’m in bed just to settle me down for sleep. At home I only ever read in bed and I’m not one to read in the bath. I do like reading when I’m in a queue but I find this difficult to do when I have kids with me.

Are you the type of person that only reads one book at a time or can
you read more than one at a time?

I have tried to read more than one book at a time but I don’t do it well – I usually end up having 5 or however many half-read books. Having said that, I am making an effort to read one NF per month and I find that the best way to get through my stash of NF is to read one chapter a day – occasionally the subject matter is a bit heavy and one needs time to process. So technically, I am usually reading two books at the same time – my regular book and a NF book.

What is the last book you bought?

I haven’t bought anything for Rose in ages because I’ve been getting loads of gifts – she has enough material loaded to last me for the next 4 months or so. I don’t remember when I last bought myself a paper book (I decided at the beginning of the year to STOP buying paper books until I’ve read most of what’s on my shelf)  but this past weekend I bought books for my kids. There was an Anthony Horowitz (I think its called Necropolis or something like that) and an Afrikaans book for Child1 called Dieresprokies uit Afrika. Also bought a sticker book for Child2.

What are you currently reading?

I’ve just started with Stig Larson’s Millenium trilogy for maybe the third time. It’s going a bit slow and to be honest, I’m ready to give up. I’m giving it another 2 chapters before I make a decision.

If you come across an unfamiliar word, do you stop to look it up right away?

When I read a paper book, then I sound out the word. If it leaves a beautiful “taste” in my mouth then I look it up. Now that I have Rose I do it ALL THE TIME. That is one of my most FAVOURITE features on the Kindle – you can do it while you are reading.

Do you snack while you read? If so, favorite reading snack?

Only if I read a magazine and then I would do chips. I do NOT like to see fingerprints on books. Even my own! I have a bit of book OCD which is why I don’t even frequent the library.  I wrote about that here. My DH does the library routine with our kids and reads those library book stories to Child2 as well!

And so? How do you read? Do a post or leave your answers in the comments. OK?

Later.x

I am not going to go into all the detail of your post. I keep my books according to author and then according to size. I love reading murder mysteries, if a book doesn’t grab in within the first two chapters I ditch it. Last year I left to brand new books in the lounge of the Beacon Isle Hotel. I hope whoever picked it up enjoyed them. I don’t eat while reading and I do most of my reading in bed. If I read during the day I don’t get to do anything else. For me it is always “just another page before I turn out the light”.

I wish I had more time to read – my books are kept on various bookcases all over the house – I can’t bring myself to give books away. I prefer stand alone books and can only read in my bed or in the bath! I only read one at a time and the last book we bought was Jock of the Bushveld. I am not reading anything right now but have about 8 books next to my bed :)

too many things to say so I’ll pick just a few.

I read anytime but I have to restrict myself to reading at night only otherwise nothing else would ever get done. You know those goals lists? yes well… there’d be like 3 out of 25 if I let myself totally loose. But I am responsible.

I never look up words. Mainly because I understand everything. It’s usually in the medical thriller type books that there are big words and then I don’t much care because I read in context :)

I don’t eat while reading but I do drink tea/ coffee :) and I buy way too many books – this is a post in drafts on the org blog but the Kindle has not saved me any money. I think the last was a stack of 3 Sinead Moriartys. Wait, and I bought a Cathy Kelly on the weekend.

    Love this post!!
I don’t organize my books, apart from size, i like them mixed up. I would like to read series books, but i don’t know of any I’d like.
I can not read upsetting or traumatic stories – I know I’m a wimp.
I always read in bed at night until my eyelids close. If my husband goes to bed before me i will leave the bathroom light on and the door open so i can read without turning the lamp on (tut, tut).
I only read one book at a time. I dont really read NF, i would be very interested to know what NF you read.
Last book i bought was ‘Howards End’. I’m currently reading ‘Rebecca’.
If i NEED to know the meaning of a word i will look it up, otherwise i skip it.
I don’t eat while i read, but i will drink copious amounts of tea if given to me : )
Thanks for a great post. I’m joining a book club on Thursday and this has got me very much in the mood. x

    1. All my NF are together, series together…3 rows deep on my book case. 2. No preference
    3. Any time is fine by me, but realistically it now means early mornings before the pink terrorist wakes up.4. One at a time. 5. NLP for me and Storieman 1 for Nicola 6.Ring of Solomo 7. I tend to skip around it if I can.8.Nope

I always read more than one book at a time and just stick with the Larsson book – you need to be about half way through the first book and then it gets totally gripping for the other 2 and a half books!

I agree Cat, the Larsson book is great. I read the first book in 3 days and had to wait for a few days to read the last two books and I was not a happy camper. I couldn’t wait to get through it and I had withdrawal symptoms for a few days after I was done. Though it’s not my usual type of book but I loved it and for once I found myself rooting for the ‘villain’
