Exercise: a summary in bullet points

  • I am not particularly enjoying boot camp and will go as far as saying that it’s really not my thing.
  • I miss running.
  • I can’t clear my head in boot camp while doing lunges and abdominal crunches etc. because I am too busy trying to stay alive!
  • I miss running.
  • I am stopping boot camp when this month is over because it is a bit of a logistical nightmare with my DH working some evenings. I have to fetch my kids and they have to watch me exercise and only once I am done do we all go home for the first time. This means that I can’t add a run to my workout.
  • I miss running.
  • My body is also craving yoga which is essentially in conflict with boot camp. In yoga we don’t believe in hurting our bodies. Boot camp = no pain no gain.
  • I miss running.
  • So far I have discovered my stomach muscles (Abdominals) and the muscle under your bum – not sure what that one is called but it is VERY sore today and I could barely sit!
  • I miss running.
  • My Tween boy asked if he could run with me. Of course I said yes! I am working on a plan for the two of us. I think he is going to give me a run for my money though. He is FAST!
  • I miss running.
  • Ugh did I mention how much I hate Boot Camp?
  • I went for a short run after work and was really gentle with myself. It was AWESOME!
  • I am so going to run this weekend!

WJ, our running coach is a boot camp trainer. She started a group in the area and offered us a VERY decent discount. I signed up only for one month. NEVER AGAIN! My plan was to run at 3pm everyday for about an hour. Then rest for a bit, then go to Boot Camp at 17:15. Currently I’m not able to fit in the run because I have to fetch the kids – didn’t count on my DH working so many evenings.

I have heard about this kettle bell business but don’t know much about it. I am actually too afraid to even google it.

When you exercise you get a good pain and a horrible pain. I don’t mind the good aches and pains. However, with boot camp I only experience the horrible pains. I can’t even sit properly!

I hear you. Bootcamp is hectic. I did crossfit for 3 months and I almost had a mental breakdown (well, actually i did!) It was so traumatic – i pushed and pushed my body until it quit on me and then I had a panic attack! I have taken a month off and I am beginning to feel stable in mind and body. There is a place to push yourself but I dont believe in doing it 3 times a week unless you are going to GOLD or something! I had to ask myself WHY AM I DOING THIS? I am now doing pilates on Mondays, training moderately to hard on tues/wed, running on thurs (5km) and a long trail run over weekends. Be kind – find exercise that stimulates your mind and body – for each person it is different. For you it sounds like running so RUN FORREST RUN! :-)

ps kettlebell is awesome, dont be scared, I do it and its a brilliant full body workout you can do in your garden!

You have a really nice routine going! I do think that whatever we end up choosing depends on why we do it in the first place. When I run I get to clear my head and this is the time for me to get clarity on certain issues. Also, it’s the only alone time I have at the moment and I am simply not getting this out of the boot camp. I am considering joining a running club in the coming weeks – just doing some more homework on it. Will check out the Kettle Bell thing. Can you believe that I have NEVER ever done Pilates? Going to find a class in the area and try it out as well.

I’m 3 sessions into Boot Camp and I have a love/hate relationship with it. I’m not disciplined enough to exercise on my own and need that drill sergeant mentality to push myself, otherwise I don’t train at optimum levels and then I may as well not bother. I’ve been very sore after all 3 sessions but I attribute that to not having worked out properly or at maximum levels for years.
I hear you on the yoga thing but to be honest, I’ve tried both yoga and pilates and find myself yawning and bored half way through.
Jules, if you love running and it works for you, then stick with it. If that’s what works for you then I say go for it!
P.S. last nights Boot Camp was the first one I actually enjoyed and aside from sore calves because of all the running, my body is feeling fantastic today! :-) Long may it last. My instructor assures me that after the second week it will start to feel better! She better be right!
