Earlier today I was rereading some of my posts in Google Reader (I do subscribe to myself btw…I think I’m worth it) and I simply LOVED the comments that came out of this post and I found them to be quite an eye-opener.
Thank you so much for sharing WHY you write. I love that we all do it for very different reasons but that ultimately it does boil down to the fact that we LOVE community and the support and connection that comes with it.
I am curious about how your writing ends up as a blog post? Are you constantly on the lookout for things to blog?
I don’t think that I am wearing a “blogging hat” so to speak, but then again maybe I am. I basically blog whatever is in my head (or heart) at the time and occasionally I take my cues from other bloggers. For example, this handwriting piece was inspired by a picture of another bloggers handwriting when she posted a picture of a card that she had sent someone.
None of my posts are planned, though it can take a couple of hours or more for it to show up on this space. Also, I never force myself. If I am not feeling it then I am not feeling it. I must be honest though I have never NOT felt like writing something (except for yesterday) – it is generally part and parcel of my daily routine.
My best writing time is in the mornings. My workday starts at 8am. I arrive at work just before 7am so I basically have a full hour and a bit to have breakfast, catch up on personal emails and write a post or two or three.
I don’t even really plan the structure of the posts. I just write it as though I am sending an email to a friend. I sometimes have an idea of what I am going to post on but mostly I don’t. It really is all about the space I am in at the time. I mostly publish the posts at night when I get home. In this way I have time to change my mind about publishing a particular post (I occasionally write very angry posts) and I also have all day to edit it in my head.
At night I may or may not make small changes and then I will either go ahead and publish or I will just keep it saved in drafts for another day.
I very seldom do any writing at night or on the weekends but if I really feel for it then I just go with it to get it out of my system. Occasionally if I need to then I may write something during my workday as well. I try not to do this but sometimes it just HAS to happen at THAT VERY MOMENT.
I do occasionally record some ideas of blogging topics when something pops into my mind. Usually in a little notebook when I’m not at a computer.
So. How do you write? Do you have a process? IF so, what is your process? Are you wearing a “blogging hat?”
Whenever I read your posts…I feel that words seem to come to you so easily. Often times, I have so much to write about…but the words just don’t want to come. Love the idea of writing as if I am writing an e-mail to a friend…what a wonderful thought.
I definitely have a blogger’s hat on. Most things in life I think of like “ooh, this would be good to blog about”.
And even when things are terrible, I know that at least there’s a blog post out of it. This I learned from my friend (a 3am one) – we had a very frustrating experience in Thailand about a cup of tea (can you believe?) and when I was relating it to our friend afterward, he said, “at least you now have a story” and that’s true. His thing is that if everything is smooth sailing all the time, there’s no interest (and no story) and it’s true, esp with travel, I’ve found.
I have the problem of too much to say and not enough blog posts – I really don’t want to get into that space of more than a post a day.
I do exactly like you – I write to one person. That’s what works for me with my newsletters too – to have a nice, comfortable, conversational tone.
I sometimes schedule posts but mostly I write fresh in the moment
which is why I’m very rarely prepared with my photos!
I have that same problem of too much to say. And I also don’t really want to do more than one post a day.
I have a running list in my little moleskine diary/notebook of ideas – somehow I never run out of them. And because I also record our history, I always have something to post.
Hunter often says to me, when something happens, there’s a good blogpost for you.
I also sometimes write one and leave if in drafts to post later.
Love how Hunter is your blogging buddy in all this
How come I missed this post? It must have been when i was computerless and in CT.
I started blogging to showcase my scrappy stuff, but it has turned into my personal space for venting and sharing my hopes, dreams and photos of my girls.
I never really *think* about a blog post. If i feel like blogging, i do. At the moment I have somany topics in my head that i want to blog about, so have i predone the posts (something i rarely do). I just love the feedback I get from my readers on how to deal with certain issues, but i’m also afraid of baring my soul completely to all and sundry.
So i often don’t write about what is really bothering me.
Love your posts tho, and the way you write. So very readable and leaves you wanting more x
I carry a notebook with me all the time, to make scribbles in when I think of something, and I make voice notes on my cellphone too. I always have about 20 blog posts in concept form. I usually edit before I publish ‘coz my thinking tends to jump all over the place while I write.
